Lewis County Museum and Project Homeless
Wednesday January 27th, 2015 we went on a field trip to the Lewis County historical museum.
You can go to their website to see what it is HERE
This is a picture of my little brother doing morse code. we learned how people used it to communicate because they couldn't call (there was no phones yet). Every letter has a dot or dash or both. I figured out what my name was in morse code then got to send it using their machines.
I learned about some of the artifacts that they used to use. There was coffee grnders, butter churners, hair curlers, and tools. The most interesting to me was the hair curlers because it was really tiny and they had to heat it on the stove.
There was a little hands on area for little kids (like my brother). he got to pretend he was working in a store with my friend.
There was glass rooms set up like old rooms and stores. I saw old candies and baseballs, a cow brander, saddles and clothes.
There was an indian room all about the Cowlitz indians. This was a display about their village. I thought the longhouse was interesting because if they put a fire inside to cook they could take pieces of the roof off to let the smoke out. We learned about them building a bridge thing that you could walk on that went just over the water and they stood up on it and speared fish. Once you pass the age of 10 (if you're a guy) you usually work outside like building and fishing, the women were basket weavers.
The room was set up like an old barber shop. There were scissors and chairs and hair oils. She told us a story about how Teddy Roosevelt went hunting and they caught a bear and he refused to kill it. A cartoonist drew a cartoon of it and then it became famous. A man from a toy shop put some of the bears out in the front of the shop and called Teddy's Bears and people started buying them to show their support for Roosevelt.
I learned that there is an indian chief that is still alive and lives in our town. We've seen him before at the Cowlitz pow wow that we've attended the last two years. They built almost everything out of cedar. Their baskets were made out of cedar roots and each woman had their own cedar tree to make their own baskets from.
They had a huge train display for the whole county. It was my favorite part because of all the little details and humor that they put into it (like Thomas the train was drowning in a lake and there was a dog peeing on a fence). I thought it was interesting to see what the county looked like a long time ago.
More little store front shops
You could push the buttons and make the trains go, make lights come on, and it would play sounds.
This is a replica of a tree stump that Teddy Roosevelt stood on to give a speach in Chehalis. Over 10,000 people came to hear him speak. He was shot but he didn't die because his note cards were so thick.
Thursday January 28th we spent the day helping with the Lewis County homeless census at the county fairgrounds. I worked at the kids table and handed out coloring pictures, toothbrushes, and stickers to homeless kids.My parents worked to serve coffee and pastries. We were there from 8am-3pm. There was other booths that were handing out toys, health support, and there was people from the centralia college giving free haircuts. There was people there to fix their bikes, nurses giving free flu shots, veterinarians to check on their animals. There was little stores where they could get free socks, new shoes, dog food, coats, blankets, backpacks, and tarps. They also had raffles for phones, bikes, blankets, and other little stuff. They served a hot meal and helped a lot of people.
